As Alberta stands on the edge of economic uncertainty, the silence from the province’s official opposition is becoming deafening. Premier Danielle Smith’s government continues to gamble on oil and gas revenues, ignoring the mounting risks of global price volatility and environmental liabilities. Yet the Alberta NDP, the party best positioned to challenge this trajectory, remains hesitant to articulate a bold alternative.

This is not just a political misstep—it’s a missed opportunity to lead.

Despite record profits in the energy sector, workers are losing jobs and communities are absorbing the costs of deregulation and climate inaction. The UCP’s approach has left Alberta vulnerable to the boom-and-bust cycles that have long haunted our economy. And while the governing party doubles down on short-term gains, the NDP has yet to offer a compelling vision for long-term stability.

Albertans deserve more than reactive politics. They deserve leadership.

The NDP must move beyond critiquing Premier Smith’s rhetoric and policies. It must present a proactive economic plan—one that speaks to affordability, healthcare, job security, and climate resilience. These are not fringe issues; they are the daily concerns of families across the province.

With a substantial war chest built from grassroots donations, the NDP has the resources to launch a robust campaign. What it lacks is urgency. By allowing the UCP to dominate the narrative, the NDP risks becoming a spectator in a game it should be playing to win.

This moment calls for courage. The NDP must stop waiting for an election call and start shaping the conversation. That means engaging Albertans directly, building a strong organizational foundation, and offering a clear economic roadmap that doesn’t hinge on fossil fuel fortunes.

Alberta’s future is not inevitable—it’s a choice. And right now, the NDP has a chance to make that choice matter.
