Buying candidates for local elections
Quote from Steve on July 24, 2020, 8:11 amBill 29 proposes changes to rules for municipal and school board elections, including allowing people to donate up to $5,000 for as many candidates as they like. Those with money can pretty well choose their candidate for a local or municipal election. In CBC article, "Municipal Affairs Minister Kaycee Madu has said the changes are designed to better engage Albertans in local issues and "level the playing field," allowing the best candidates to run and win. It's hard to see how this can possibly "level the playing field" as he suggests.
I don't see how this will engage Albertans more. Maybe he means enrage citizens more. One wouldn't have to show up to vote because the position as already been bought and paid for. In a rigged election like this, there isn't any "winning."
