How the U.S. election outcome could affect Canada's environment and energy future
Quote from Steve on October 5, 2020, 8:42 amAn article fron the CBC, by Robson Fletcher this morning, quotes Alberta Premier, Jason Kenney sa saying, "Every major expert in energy consumption projects says that there will be substantial consumption and demand for oil and gas for decades to come."
Mr. Fletcher's enthusiasm isn't shared across the country. Even Ontario, another Conservative province, is starting to eye their options. Ontario and Alberta face a growing split as economic interests diverge over fossil fuels. Then there is the United States presidential election coming up next month that could throw a wrench in Alberta and Canada's oil & gas plans.
Specific policy issues in a U.S. election hold particular stakes for Canada, including energy and the environment, national defence, the border and migration and U.S. relations with China.
Biden said he would rank countries' performance in meeting their Paris commitments and will impose trade tariffs on those not living up to their potential. That includes Canada. It's a well known fact that our Paris commitment was little more than a joke. This will have strong implications for the direction of fossil fuelled energy in this country.
