4 tornados confirmed as Michigan storms down trees and power lines; 5 people killed

CANTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) — At least four tornados touched down in Michigan as part of severe storms powered by strong winds that killed five people, while downing trees, tearing roofs off buildings and leaving hundreds of thousands of customers without power, officials said.

The National Weather Service on Friday confirmed that an EF-1 tornado with winds of 90 mph (145 kph) crossed from Ingham County into the western edge of adjacent Livingston County on Thursday night.

Two other EF-1 tornados were reported in Wayne County’s Belleville and south of Newport in Monroe County.

A weaker EF-0 tornado with peak winds of 80 mph (128 kph) was on the ground for less than two miles in Wayne County’s Canton Township, west of Detroit, the weather service said. Alberta NDP says Smith government mishandling doctor shortage

Alberta’s NDP is criticizing the United Conservative’s handling of the ongoing physician shortage in the province.

During a Tuesday press conference, status of women critic Julia Hayter, accused the UCP of not following through with their promise to promptly fix Alberta’s health care system.

Hayter said Premier Danielle Smith “has her head in the sand” and is ignoring the problems Albertans are facing including limited access to doctors.

Back in October, Smith promised that within 90 days, Alberta’s health care system would be fixed.

But, Hayter pointed out that it’s been over 300 days, and many Albertans still struggle to access doctors.

As Canada Burns, Danielle Smith Does Event with Activist Who Says Climate ‘Not a Crisis’

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith is headlining an oil and gas industry event this week alongside a U.S. “fossil fuels advocate” named Alex Epstein who says that human-caused climate change is “not a crisis” and that rising global temperatures are only “a minor variable” in out-of-control wildfires.

Epstein and Smith are both speaking at the Energy Business Forum, part of a conference hosted by the Canadian Energy Executive Association. It is being held in the mountain resort town of Banff, Alberta, only several hundred kilometres from Kelowna, where thousands of people recently fled their homes due to severe wildfires that scientists say are being intensified by climate change.

The conference, which includes an “Oilmen’s Golf Tournament,” as well as a “a fun Mardi Gras-themed costume party,” is touted by organizers as “bringing together industry leaders and their partners, government, academia and Indigenous partners to meet and discuss important topics affecting our industry and its future.”

Threads web app finally available two months after launch

Meta’s Twitter competitor, Threads, has finally gotten a web app just two months after the platform launched, and it’s available now.

Launched on July 5, 2023, Meta’s Twitter competitor Threads quickly amassed over 100 million users on the Instagram-integrated platform.

It was missing quite a few features at launch, although Meta quickly added things like the commonly asked for following feed.

Their latest major addition to the platform is a web app, which is finally available for users to enjoy.
