Smith orders final decision, launch of Alberta Police Service | CTV News
Alberta’s new premier is moving ahead on a plan to ditch the RCMP and create a provincial police force, despite a report stating it will cost taxpayers more.
Danielle Smith made the order in a Wednesday mandate letter to Public Safety and Emergency Services Minister Mike Ellis.
In it, she instructed Ellis to work with Justice Minister Tyler Shandro to “launch an Alberta Police Service (APS).” In Shandro’s letter, she instructed him to “finalize a decision” on the matter.
Both letters were made public Thursday, but contained no timelines for when changes could be made. The pair of ministers have spoken in favour of an APS this week.

Smith asks Shandro to develop sovereignty act in mandate letter | CTV News
Alberta’s justice minister has received a long to-do list from Premier Danielle Smith in his mandate letter.
The letter says Tyler Shandro is to develop and enact the proposed sovereignty act to challenge “unconstitutional federal encroachments on areas of provincial jurisdiction.”
“I expect our cabinet to remain united and determined in the face of a federal government that no longer treats its partners in Confederation as equals,” Smith writes in the letter dated Nov. 9.
“We must proactively protect Albertans from continued federal government overreach, including hostile economic policies that landlock our provincial resources, that chase billions in investment and thousands of jobs from our province, and that are detrimental to the short-term and long-term prosperity of Albertans.”

Inflation, COVID-19 holding Canadians back from holiday travel, poll suggests
High https://globalnews.ca/tag/inflation and COVID-19 http://globalnews.ca/tag/covid are dampening some Canadians’ hopes for travelling as the holiday season approaches, a new poll indicates.
Right now, 77 per cent of 1,001 Canadians Ipsos surveyed exclusively for Global News in October said they’re comfortable travelling within Canada over the holidays, while 55 per cent said the same for international travel.
For those who aren’t comfortable travelling, 65 per cent of them said high prices for hotels and tickets, for example, are holding them back, and 61 per cent said they’re either afraid of catching COVID-19 or remain anxious about relaxed travel restrictions.
The https://globalnews.ca/tag/ipsos survey comes as officials are worrying over a potential recession https://globalnews.ca/news/9190029/imf-global-economic-outlook-2022/ during a winter where respiratory illnesses like COVID-19 and influenza https://globalnews.ca/news/9204385/covid-19-flu-shots-winter-justin-trudeau/ are expected to circulate more widely.
