Project Summary    

In this two-step project, Clear Seas first
worked with partner Serco Canada Marine to research and document the use
of exhaust gas cleaning systems, commonly known as scrubbers, to reduce
sulphur emissions from ships. Building on the results of this initial
work, Clear Seas conducted further research to expand the literature
search and source additional data for a detailed exploration of scrubber
discharge water and the pollutants it contains.

This research initiative contributes new findings to the debate on
the impact of scrubber discharge water, and supports effective planning,
use and regulation of scrubber systems in Canadian waters and beyond.
By taking an in-depth look at the data and analytical methods used
across a range of studies to support diverse conclusions on scrubber
impacts, this work also identifies nuances and differences between the
available assessments and brings clarity to conflicting views on the
acceptability of scrubbers from an environmental standpoint.

Imperiled Ukrainian nuclear power plant has the world on edge – a safety expert explains what could go wrong:

Russian forces occupy Europe’s largest nuclear power plant, the
Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Station in the Ukrainian city of Enerhodar.
Russian and Ukrainian forces are fighting nearby, and shelling has damaged power and communication lines to the plant, prompting fears for the plant’s safety and evoking painful memories in a country still scarred by the world’s worst nuclear accident, at Chernobyl in 1986.

In addition, Russian authorities have developed plans to disconnect the plant
from Ukraine’s power grid – in the event of damage to the plant,
according to the Russians, as a prelude to switching the plant to the
grid in Russian-occupied territory, according to the Ukrainians.
Disconnecting the plant from the grid is a risky operation.

The Conversation asked Najmedin Meshkati, a professor and nuclear safety expert at the University of Southern California, to explain the risks of warfare taking place in and around nuclear power plants.

RCMP, others investigating following alleged exorcism at Sask. children’s bible camp | CBC News:

In addition to the alleged exorcism conducted earlier
this summer, it’s unclear how the man in question was approved to work
with kids at the Redberry Bible Camp, located 70 kilometres north of
Saskatoon. On the man’s own Facebook page, he details a recent, lengthy
history of pornography and drug addiction, domestic violence and firing
from his previous job as a camp counsellor.

“This is just nuts.
Absolutely astounding,” said Ailsa Watkinson, a University of Regina
professor emerita of social work with a specialty in child protection.
“If that was my child, I’d be horrified.”

is scrambling to alleviate power shortages and bring more water to the
drought-hit basin of the Yangtze river as it battles a record-breaking
heatwave by seeding clouds, deploying relief funds and developing new
sources of supply.

A political scientist told The Tyee he expects aggressive attacks on
politicians to increase in Canada as right-wing politicians continue to
engage in “rage farming” by advancing false and misleading conspiracy
narratives.

“They know how to feed those narratives,” said University of Alberta political scientist Jared Wesley.

“It is little half-truths, sometimes more blatant lies, that kind of plant the seeds for this rage farming,” he said.
