If you thought this summer’s heat waves were bad, a new study has some disturbing news about dangerous heat in the future:

As global temperatures rise, people in the tropics, including
places like India and Africa’s Sahel region, will likely face
dangerously hot conditions almost daily by the end of the century – even
as the world reduces its greenhouse gas emissions, a new study shows.

The mid-latitudes, including the U.S., will also face increasing
risks. There, the number of dangerously hot days, marked by temperatures
and humidity high enough to cause heat exhaustion, is projected to
double by the 2050s and continue to rise.

In the study, scientists looked at population growth, economic
development patterns, energy choices and climate models to project how
heat index levels – the combination of heat and humidity – will change
over time. We asked University of Washington atmospheric scientist David Battisti, a co-author of the study, published Aug. 25, 2022, to explain the findings and what they mean for humans around the world.

Energy regulator gives Trans Mountain a ‘break’ on possible oil spill costs, say MPs, environmentalists:

The regulator told Canada’s National Observer that
the Crown corporation has to maintain “total coverage of $1.1 billion”
to protect the public and the environment from a possible oil spill from
both the current pipeline and its expansion. But others say this is not
what was agreed upon in 2019 and that a total of $2.1 billion is needed
to cover oil spill risks on both pipelines.

The existing Trans
Mountain pipeline carries 300,000 barrels of oil per day from Edmonton
to Burnaby, B.C., and has $1 billion in financial assurances — such as
cash, third-party liability insurance and lines of credit — to deal with
the cost of a potential oil spill. The expansion project will twin the
existing pipeline and raise its capacity to 890,000 barrels per day.

Ukraine investigating 28,000 war crimes by Russia, including child deaths: ambassador – National | Globalnews.ca:

Ukraine’s ambassador to Canada says her country is investigating more than 28,000 suspected war crimes, including the killing of 373 children by Russian forces.

Ambassador Yulia Kovaliv says the crimes being documented and probed, with help from Canadian investigators, include the kidnapping of children taken to Russia, and the murder of fleeing civilians.

“What we want to do is to properly document each and every crime and we will bring Russia to justice,” she said in an interview, during which she was called by Ukraine’s prosecutor general about the issue.

Among the war crimes being investigated are the discovery of 458 bodies, including 12 children, in Bucha, a suburb of Kyiv occupied for 33 days by the Russians.

Shortly after the image surfaced on Mackenzie’s public Telegram
channel, NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh called on Poilievre to “denounce
Jeremy Mackenzie and Diagolon,” who he said are “designated as violent
extremists by Canada’s Integrated Terrorism Assessment Centre.”

Singh was referring to a report from Press Progress,
which last week published a document it obtained through
access-to-information from the Integrated Terrorism Assessment Centre, a
federal organization that assesses threats of terrorism to Canada.

The document, dated
Feb. 17, 2022, classifies Mackenzie as one of the “key anti-government
IMVE (ideologically motivated violent extremism) adherents” that
