Teck shares plunge on Ottawa environment review of BC coal project

Canada’s national association for miners, the Mining Association of Canada (MAC), is weighing in on the federal government’s decision to review Teck Resources‘ proposed Castle Mountain metallurgical coal project in British Columbia, saying the additional review is unnecessary as the project is already undergoing a rigorous provincial environmental review process, and accusing the government of making a political decision.

“We are very disheartened by the federal government’s decision on the Castle project given the expansion fell well below the threshold to being subject to the Impact Assessment Act (IAA),” said Pierre Gratton, president and CEO of MAC.

“This decision certainly has the potential to lead to longer timelines at a time of unprecedented global economic uncertainty.”

“It seems clear that this decision was political in nature as there are many projects across the country with equal or more significant impacts that are not subject to the IAA,” he added.

Reducing methane emissions is a key element of the Pan-Canadian Framework on Clean Growth and Climate Change. Government documents show that Canada already has a significant gap (77 million tonnes of GHGs ) to achieve its Paris Agreement commitment.

Canada’s climate policy commits to strengthening 2030 emission targets and working towards net-zero emissions by 2050. While correcting course to meet the 2025 target, there is also an opportunity to plan for a more ambitious 2030 target. But Canada cannot achieve any of these goals without stronger methane emission regulations that take into account this new evidence.

Alberta Start-Up Plans Solar Arrays for Abandoned Oil Wells

“The idea is to help accelerate and reduce the cost of abandonment in the area…and also to decrease some of the energy costs for irrigation farmers,” explained RenuWell Energy Solutions founder and president Keith Hirsche. He said the approach doesn’t differ much from a standard solar installation, but makes more efficient use of the space the projects require, using lands that already have access to roads and power lines.

“The best site locations are generally located on farmlands, where farmers can buy the power directly for their irrigation systems,” CBC writes, citing Hirsche. And the potential across Alberta’s 163,000 inactive and abandoned wells is huge: “If around 10% of abandoned wells around the province are utilized for solar projects, it could possibly meet the land resource requirements for 6,200 MW of solar energy development.”

Hirsche stressed the solar work won’t remove the obligation to clean up the abandoned wells. “It’s really important to make sure this isn’t another dumping ground for oil and gas liabilities,” he said.

Top conservation groups challenge party leaders to take N.B. from laggard to leader on nature, water protection

Today, New Brunswick sits second-to-last in Canada on total protected land, at only 4.6 per cent.

Past governments have committed to bring protected areas to 10 per cent by 2020, but no new protected areas have been announced publicly, and that will still leave 90 per cent of the province’s land open to commercial and industrial use, including forestry and mining.

Nature NB, Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society—NB Chapter, Conservation Council of New Brunswick and Nature Trust of New Brunswick are asking party leaders to define how they will meet the international and national land conservation targets of 25 per cent by 2025 and 30 per cent by 2030, respectively.

The groups’ questionnaire also asks leaders if they will enact long overdue laws to protect water as called for in the provincial water protection strategy, and how they will protect wetlands, coastal habitats and healthy forests in order to give our communities greater resilience from flooding and extreme weather caused by climate change.
