LNG for Marine Shipping Emits More Than Fuel Oil – The Energy Mix

The methane routinely released by container and cruise ships operating on liquefied natural gas (LNG) makes them a bigger climate threat than the heavy fuel oil vessels they’re increasingly replacing, according to a bombshell working paper released yesterday by the International Council on Clean Transportation and STAND.earth.

The report concludes that the most popular among the new generation of LNG Marine engines “is also the leakiest,” ICCT reports, producing 70 to 82% more carbon and methane pollution than the least-polluting traditional fuel. While LNG produces fewer immediate emissions than the alternatives when it’s burned onboard a ship, its impact is multiplied when a life cycle analysis factors in the methane released through hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, as well as “methane slip” during routine ship operations

Without Rachel Notley’s reviled but effective social license strategy, support outside the Prairies drops for pipeline’s expansion – Alberta Politics

Surely a more likely explanation for the timing of this trend than the date of Ottawa’s purchase in May 2018 is that while former NDP premier Rachel Notley’s much-maligned “social license” strategy was making progress on creating more positive perceptions about pipelines throughout Canada, UCP Premier Jason Kenney’s vituperative campaign of war rooms, inquiries and rhetorical attacks on other regions is a flop.

As the old saying goes, you’ll catch more flies with honey than with vinegar. And as is becoming obvious, while Ms. Notley’s approach of taking measures to mitigate Alberta’s outsized contribution of global climate change while pushing hard for the pipeline, so bitterly attacked as ineffective by the political right in the lead-up to last April’s Alberta election, was winning friends in the rest of Canada, Mr. Kenney’s angry bluster is driving them away.

A look at Islamophobia in Canada, 3 years after the Quebec mosque shooting

Three days after a gunman opened fire inside a mosque in Quebec City in 2017, worshippers walked through the mosque’s doors again.

It
was a sign that those at the Islamic Cultural Centre of Quebec, and
Muslims across Canada, wanted to find a way back to normalcy.

There were blood stains on the carpets, and bullet holes in the wall and windows.

Turned to Stone: How Quickly Jason Kenney Betrayed Rural Albertans | The Tyee

Not only has Kenney clearly telegraphed to companies that they need not pay their municipal taxes, his government appears to be signalling that even more assessment giveaways could be forthcoming for his favourite industry — on the backs of local governments.

Some local mayors are now questioning the very viability of their municipalities. If local governments are forced to fold or be absorbed into larger regions, many elected voices of rural Alberta now raising the alarm on delinquent oil and gas companies will be silenced. Or perhaps that’s the point.

It is important to remember it is not just municipalities being screwed by the Kenney government and the oil and gas sector, but local landowners as well.
