What happened in residential schools was genocide. But what really matters is justice.: Canada wasn’t killing Indians because of our cultures; it was
killing Indians to get rid of the “Indian problem” as Indian Affairs
officials kept referring to it. Commentators often refer to Duncan
Campbell Scott’s quote regarding Indian policy in Canada as proof that
the intention was assimilation and not elimination. Scott was the deputy
superintendent general for the Department of Indian Affairs from 1913
to 1932, who explained in 1920:

“I want to get rid of the Indian problem….Our objective
is to continue until there is not a single Indian in Canada that has
not been absorbed into the body politic and there is no Indian question
and no Indian Department.”

However, there is more to the story than this. In 1907, Dr. Peter Bryce, the Chief Medical Officer for the federal government, wrote a report on the conditions in residential schools that detailed the astounding number of deaths of Indian children in those schools.

The government’s own lawyer also warned Canadian officials in 1907:

UNDRIP bill reaches end of its journey: This passed even after repeated attempts by the Mohawk Council of
Kahnawake (MCK) and the Assembly of the First Nations Quebec-Labrador
(AFNQL) to include amendments in the bill in order to support it.
“Everything that I am seeing will point out to me that in terms of Bill
C-15, the battle will go on,” said MCK chief Ross Montour.

“But for now, the government has succeeded in passing some neutered
law that names the declaration without it being the declaration. It’s
really a colonial approach and mindset.”

Court Freezes Dangerous Arctic Drilling Plan, But Biden Administration Won’t Ice It for Good: During the previous administration, the oil industry made a mad dash to drill into the oil-rich depths beneath the Arctic tundra. But there’s one big problem: As fossil fuel emissions heat our planet, permafrost — the once permanently frozen layer of Arctic soil — is melting, making it harder (and more expensive) for oil and gas companies to set up drilling operations.  

This literally shaky ground might encourage some companies to change their ways and invest in clean energy. But ConocoPhillips has a different solution. Refreeze the tundra — then drill it for oil.

The company’s plan is a classic example of the fossil fuel industry’s capacity for single-minded greed, even as the climate careens toward disaster.

Big Oil can’t increase production and pretend it’s part of the climate solution – Environmental Defence: That was the timeline laid down by the most prestigious body of climate scientists for limiting warming to 1.5 degrees, the “safe” threshold for global warming.

But it’s clear that many big polluters are only using it as
greenwash. After all, if you make a product that is the cause of climate
change in the first place–fossil fuels like coal, oil, and gas–your
approach to tackling climate change better be to fundamentally change
your business model, and stop producing this dangerous product.
