support over the past few months.

says there’s been a steady increase in people accessing provincial
support over the past few months.
“And most of that increase is
among single individuals who are available for work but do not have
work,” he said. “Which would suggest some people’s UI benefits are
expiring and then they’re transferring onto provincial social
assistance.”
Tombe says close to 60,000 people are on social assistance. That’s about 1.7 per cent of the province’s labour force.
