EDMONTON – After a gusty day Tuesday, the wind will be down today. But, temperatures will be down as well.

Edmonton and much of central and northern Alberta will get an afternoon high in single digits today.

A trough of low pressure has been producing some flurries in parts of western and northwestern Alberta early this morning.

We’ll continue to see some light snow/flurries in the foothills and mountains.

There’s a slight risk of some mixed precipitation late this morning or midday in the Edmonton region.

Areas just southwest of the city are a little more likely to see that precip than areas to the east or northeast.

However, even in spots that DO get some precipitation…it won’t amount to much (or last long).

We may see a few sunny breaks this afternoon and there’s more sun than cloud in the forecast for the next few days.

Temperatures are also set to jump back into double digits starting tomorrow.

Mornings will consistently drop to zero or a few degress below. But, afternoon highs in Edmonton will hit the 11 to 16 degree range Thursday-Sunday.

EDMONTON – Alberta officials say recent COVID-19 numbers are encouraging but still “extremely high.”

On Tuesday, the province reported 3,358 new COVID-19 cases and 33 deaths since Friday.

“Over the last few days, we have seen an encouraging decline in the total number of active cases in Alberta. Our positivity rate is falling and it has been below 10 per cent since Oct. 3,” Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Deena Hinshaw said.

“These are positive early signs that the growing number of vaccinated Albertans and the public health measures are having an impact, but I must caution that they are very early signs. We are not yet through this fourth wave and the effects that it continues to have on our health-care system.”

There are 1,053 Albertans in hospital with COVID-19, including 242 in ICU. Almost 90 per cent of patients in intensive care are not vaccinated, Premier Jason Kenney said.

“While it’s good news that COVID-19 hospitalizations and ICU admissions appear to have plateaued, our numbers are still extremely high,” Hinshaw added. “They remain significantly higher than any other peaks during the course of the pandemic.”

Out of eligible Albertans, 85.3 per cent have one vaccine dose and 76 per cent are fully vaccinated.

Thirteen Alberta schools have COVID-19 outbreaks and 451 schools are under alert, Hinshaw said.

One of the deaths reported on Tuesday included a 14-year-old with pre-existing conditions in the Central zone.

EDMONTON – The Alberta government has launched an app businesses can use to scan COVID-19 vaccine QR codes.

The app, AB Covid Records Verifier, is available for download in the Apple and Android app stores.

Much like the current proof-of-vaccination card, Albertans will scan their QR code when they enter a business participating in the province’s Restrictions Exemption Program and show their ID.

“When a valid QR code is scanned, a green checkmark will verify the proof of vaccination. It’s that easy for businesses and Albertans participating in the REP,” Premier Jason Kenney told the media on Tuesday.

Health Minister Jason Copping called it a “more secure” vaccine record and said more than 800,000 people have already accessed their QR code.

Vaccinated Albertans can download their proof-of-vaccination QR code at alberta.ca/covidrecords and download it, take a screenshot or print it, Copping said.

The app won’t store personal information, both Kenney and Copping said.

After Monday, Nov. 15, the code will become the only proof-of-vaccination document in Alberta.

The premier said he expects Alberta to have a proof-of-vaccination program until “at least the first quarter of next year, 2022.”

“We are headed into an uncertain period, even as we continue to see downward momentum in the case numbers and hospitalization numbers. Even if we exit this fourth wave…we will have to be on our guard as we go into colder weather when people spend more time indoors.”

Kenney and Copping said Alberta’s vaccine passport, which was introduced three weeks ago as a restrictions exemption program, is having the desired effect.

Alberta Health shows 85 per cent of eligible Albertans, those aged 12 and over, have now had at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine. That’s up from 78 per cent a month ago.

More than 75 per cent have had the required two doses.

EDMONTON – A two-vehicle crash in Leduc County Tuesday morning was fatal, police say.

Mounties asked commuters to avoid the area of Range Road 263 and Township Road 492 while EMS and an RCMP collision reconstructionist were on scene.

There were no other details about the victims or cause of the crash.

Traffic was expected to be diverted for several hours. 

EDMONTON – A memorial has been started at an intersection south of Edmonton where a car crash killed two local teens and left three others in grave condition.

Flowers and a stuffed owl sat at the intersection of Highway 814 and Township Road 475, east of Millet, Tuesday morning as the victims’ friends prepared to go back to school.

The teens killed on Oct. 8 have not been publicly named but were identified as two Grade 12 students at Wetaskiwin Composite High School.

The school’s superintendent told CTV News Edmonton support services would be available to those returning Tuesday.

“Our hearts go out to the families involved in this situation,” Peter Barron said. “This is incredibly tragic and it’s going to be very hard on a lot of people. The ripple effect of this is going to be significant and we just want to embrace these families and hug them close during this difficult time.”

There has been no update on the condition of the three survivors since they were taken to hospital.

Police are investigating the cause of the crash.
