EDMONTON — Nazi and confederate flags were flying at a property near Breton, Alta., Tuesday.
RCMP have been in contact with the property owner, but the flags were still up on Tuesday afternoon.
“Our investigation continues as to whether this is a criminal act or not,” RCMP said in a statement to CTV News Edmonton.
According to a neighbour, the person who lives at the property is new to the area.
Breton is around an hour southwest of Edmonton.
It is unknown how long the flags have been up for.
EDMONTON — The EE Football Team lost more than $7 million last year after revenues fell by 84 per cent from the year before, according to the team’s latest annual report.
Board of Directors Chair Janice Agrios called 2020 “the most difficult year” in the team’s history.
“These are uncertain times,” she wrote in the report. “Many have suffered and lost loved ones. But Edmonton is and has always been resilient. Our team and our fans are no different.”
The team said it incurred “significant expenses and commitments” in preparing to play a modified 2020 season that was eventually called off before it could start on Aug. 17.
Team revenue fell down to $3.8 million last year after reaching $23.5 million the year before.
The club says it relied on the Canadian Emergency Wage Subsidy for $2.5 million.
The report noted the organization had reduced its football and business staff to a “skeleton operation” amid the pandemic.
The team is still planning on the Canadian Football League holding a 14-game season, but the report indicates it’s looking at other options should the 2021 season be cancelled as well.
“Every member of this organization has the following goals. Playing games in front of fans, making the experience safe and enjoyable, and presenting a championship caliber football team,” wrote Chris Presson, the team’s president.
The team did not give an indication regarding when it was revealing its new name.
“The team will take to the field this year with a new name,” Agrios wrote. “We expect to be in a position to announce a new name shortly.”
The team had previously said it intended to reveal its rebrand this spring.
The CFL is expecting to return this year with a full 18-game season but has delayed its planned start to Aug. 5 and reduced its schedule to 14 games.
CALGARY — RCMP in British Columbia are attempting to locate a ‘person of interest’ in connection with the discovery of the body of an Alberta woman in Kootenay National Park.
Brenda Ware was found dead on May 6 along Highway 93 at a location approximately 50 kilometres northeast of Radium, B.C. Her vehicle — a red 2019 Jeep Cherokee with an Alberta licence plate — was also located at the site.
Investigators are attempting to piece together Ware’s travels between May 4 and the date of the discovery of her body. RCMP confirm Ware had been in the area of Didsbury, Alta. in the days prior to her death.
Friends of the deceased confirm Ware lived on a rural property between the southern Alberta towns of Sundre and Cremona and had been reported missing in the days prior to the discovery of her body.
RCMP have identified Philip Toner as a person of interest in the investigation into Ware’s death.
“Brenda Ware and Toner were known to each other, however the nature of that relationship will not be released at this time,” said Acting Officer-In-Charge Supt. Sanjaya Wijayakoon of the BC RCMP Major Crime Section in a statement released Monday. “Investigators are interested in speaking with Philip Toner, 41, as soon as possible.”

EDMONTON — A 38-year-old man is in custody after a 31-year-old man was stabbed at the Meadows Recreation Centre in southeast Edmonton.
Police say at approximately 9:30 p.m., the 31-year-old got into an argument with the 38-year-old who was already at the centre’s outdoor basketball court.
The verbal altercation escalated and led to the stabbing.
According to police, the 38-year-old man remained on scene, and an aggravated assault charge is pending against him.
The victim was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
EDMONTON — Alberta reported 1,449 COVID-19 cases on Tuesday after 11,852 tests.
There are 24,998 active coronavirus cases across the province, including 11,532 in the Calgary zone and 5,707 in the Edmonton zone.
Alberta’s R-value decreased from 1.12 to 1 last week, Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Deena Hinshaw said.
“These are positive signs that transmission may be starting to slow,” she added.
Hospitals have 705 Albertans with COVID-19, 163 of whom are in ICU – a pandemic high.
Three more Albertans died due to COVID-19, Hinshaw said.
Alberta has reported 211,836 cases and 2,119 death since March 2020.
Premier Jason Kenney expects Alberta will reach two million COVID-19 vaccine doses administered on Wednesday after the province’s rollout “kicked it into high gear” last week.
Alberta Health Services administered more than 270,000 doses last week when it opened bookings to teachers and Albertans born in 1991 or earlier.
On Monday, more than 190,000 Albertans booked their COVID-19 shot after eligibility expanded to 12 and older.
“It should be a source of hope and confidence that millions of Albertans have now felt the relief of knowing that they are developing protection against this lethal virus,” Kenney said.
“Your vaccine is your ticket back to normal life.”
Nearly 45 per cent of Albertans 16 and older have one dose, “helping us get closer to widespread immunity,” the premier said.
“Based on our current supply, we expect to have one half of the population vaccinated by the first week of June and two thirds by the third week of June.”
AHS will launch a centralized booking system next month to make appointments at government facilities, pharmacies and doctor’s offices, Kenney said.
Earlier Tuesday, Alberta announced it would save its AstraZeneca supply for second doses.
