The IEA report published on Tuesday
says almost 90% of new electricity generation in 2020 will be renewable,
with just 10% powered by gas and coal. The trend puts green electricity
on track to become the largest power source in 2025, displacing coal,
which has dominated for the past 50 years.

Lawyer Keith Wilson, who has worked on similar disputes between industry and landowners, said the lawsuit is groundbreaking.
“It’s the first time there has been any form of class action against oil companies. It’s a real sign of the extent to which the relationship and the normal institutions that have been in place to keep peace between two critical industries are faltering.”
Alberta’s Surface Rights Board does step in to adjudicate disputes and the provincial government has a mechanism for covering unpaid leases. Freedom-of-information documents obtained by The Narwhal magazine show Alberta paid $8 million in such claims last year.
Industry repaid about $300,000 of that, the documents say.

Judge rules Trans Mountain must release correspondence that may show bias in the arrest of Secwepemc land defenders

The Secwepemc land defenders were arrested on December 10, 2018 when they protested a consultation on the pipeline being held by former Supreme Court of Canada Justice Frank Iacobucci at Thompson Rivers University in Kamloops, BC.
Defence lawyer Joe Killoran has suggested the altercation was a result of over-policing and a bias among the RCMP and three Trans Mountain security officers (two of whom were previously RCMP officers). Killoran suggested the documents may shed light on alleged racism and bias toward the land defenders.
In December 2019, the United Nations Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, called on Canada to stop construction on the pipeline until it had secured the free, prior and informed consent of the Secwepemc peoples.

All in all, “his mandate to go all in on climate change and clean energy could not be more clear,” said Ed Maibach, director of the George Mason University Center for Climate Change Communication.
“They’ve given us a clear mandate for actions on COVID, the economy, climate change, systematic racism,” Biden said Friday night.

Old oil well sites drilled in the 1960s and 70s surround Calmar, Alta., which is located about 50 kilometres southwest of Edmonton. All of the drilling equipment and infrastructure is gone and all that remains are open pits filled with potentially contaminated soil.
Because of this, none of that land can be developed.
“Companies came, they drilled, they made millions of dollars and then they left,” states Michelle Levasseur, the town’s economic development officer. “If I’m unable to help this community grow by creating jobs and development, then our community essentially could die.”
