China paying through the nose to snub Aussie coal

    Nov 25, 2020 – 9.34am

China is paying through the nose for coal from North America while it rejects or defers shipments from Australia.

Teck said its increased sales into China had been at higher prices than sales into other markets, in an indication China is paying over the odds for coal while turning its back on Australia.

Teck produces coal from four mines in the Elk Valley region of British Columbia. Just across the border in Alberta, Gina Rinehart’s Hancock Prospecting plans to produce about 4.5 million tonnes of hard coking coal a year but faces opposition from groups concerned about the environmental impact.

Hancock Prospecting paid about $900 million to secure Riversdale Resources and its undeveloped Grassy Mountain project in Alberta last year.
