Methane Emissions Rise 32% Despite Economic Slump as EU Considers Mandatory Import Standards – The Energy Mix: With global methane emissions rising sharply, by 32% so
far this year despite the pandemic-driven recession, the European Union
may consider mandatory emission standards for oil and gas imports that
would push fossils to report and repair leaks of the climate-busting
greenhouse gas.

“Comparing the first eight months of 2019 to the same
period in 2020, the Paris-based firm Kayrros said methane leaks from oil
and gas industry hot spots climbed even higher in Algeria, Russia, and
Turkmenistan, growing by more than 40%,” the Washington Post reports,
with the United States, Iran, and Iraq also showing up among the biggest
contributors by volume. That’s a problem because methane is 84 times
more potent a greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide over the 20-year span
when humanity will be scrambling to get the climate crisis under
control.

Mi’kmaq Warrior Peacekeepers Called to Nova Scotia: The police may not be able to negotiate with the Sipekne’katik, now that the Warriors have been called in. If they feel the police are acting in “bad faith” they may decide to communicate with the Canadian Military instead. In New Brunswick in 2013 First Nations demanded the military as they felt the police had become an “objective.” If they feel the RCMP only represent the interests of the Colonists, they will be dismissed.

Tenth of pandemic stimulus spend could help world reach climate goals – study: The most ambitious goal in the Paris accord aims to cap the rise in global temperatures at 1.5 degrees Celsius, which scientists say could avert far more intense disasters, from wildfires and hurricanes to storm surges and floods.

The world could start to bring that target within reach if governments used 10% of the planned stimulus to back climate-friendly projects such as renewable energy or energy efficiency every year for the next five years, according to the paper, published in the journal Science.
