‘An impossible choice’: Beaver Lake Cree Nation looks to Supreme Court in advanced legal cost case | CBC News: In Alberta, justice goes to those who can afford it the most.

In her September 2019 decision, Justice Beverly Browne wrote it would be “manifestly unjust” to force Beaver Lake to choose between spending money on pressing community needs such as housing and social assistance or the cost of litigation.

But that decision was overturned in June by the Alberta Court of Appeals. It prompted the First Nation to seek leave to the Supreme Court earlier this month, arguing Alberta’s highest court was too restrictive. If it stands, Beaver Lake fears a First Nation would only qualify for advanced costs once its exhausted all available funds, regardless of community need.

Legislation to set five year climate targets highest priority this fall: Wilkinson: Environment Minister Jonathan Wilkinson says he plans to move quickly
this fall to set legislated targets to cut Canada’s greenhouse gas
emissions that go even further than what has already been promised.

Wilkinson told The Canadian Press in an interview this week that
COVID-19 is a priority but that Canada cannot take its eye off the ball
when it comes to climate change.

“While COVID is certainly a threat to the health and safety of
Canadians and to our economic recovery, the crisis that is climate
change, if left unaddressed, will have impacts that are even more
significant than COVID-19,” he said.

happen at pre-shutdown levels because sawmills have the same demand for
studwood and sawlogs that they did before the Pictou County pulp mill
