Feds freeze EI premiums in response to pandemic | Advisor’s Edge: The federal government will freeze employment insurance (EI) premiums for the next two years, offering a break to businesses struggling through the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Canada Employment Insurance Commission (CEIC) said Monday that the EI premium rate will remain $1.58 per $100 of insurable earnings for 2021 and 2022. For employers, who pay 1.4 times the employee rate, the rate remains $2.21.

The government said it was freezing the rate at the current level as a result of the economic impact from the pandemic. It will be crediting the EI operating account for the increases related to CERB.

Energy sector looking for aid and regulation delays as throne speech looms: Canada’s fossil-fuel sector is looking to this month’s Throne Speech for signs the federal government is not throwing in the towel on oil and gas.

Meanwhile Canadian climate strikers are threatening mass protests if the same speech doesn’t show a plan to eliminate all greenhouse-gas emissions produced by human activities in Canada in less than a decade.

Oil exploration work in the Amazon began in the Sixties and during its time in Ecuador, Texaco (which was acquired by Chevron in 2001) spilled more than 17 million gallons of oil from its pipeline and dumped 18 billion gallons of toxic waste into the rainforest.

It contaminated 1,700 square miles of once-pristine forest with poisonous and carcinogenic chemicals.
