The COVID-19 pandemic has prompted some North American governments to change their approach to protecting the environment. In the last month, there have been moves to modify, exempt, or make exceptions to a wide range of environmental rules. Ontario, Alberta and the United States have issued orders or passed regulations that change or get rid of environmental compliance and/or consulting requirements during the state of emergency we find ourselves in.

And now the whole façade, like Kenney’s political fortunes, is crumbling amidst the crisis. How did we get here?

But is injecting tens of billions into oil and gas corporations the right kind of help?
Would the proposed assistance address the root causes of the crisis? Alberta’s economic hardship started before COVID-19 and is grounded in over-dependence on those inherently cyclical commodities. But rather than pursue diversification that could shelter Albertans from the pain of future shocks, these sorts of investments double down on the status quo, hitching the wagon firmly to volatility and uncertainty.

“This is pure cruelty,” Sarah Hoffman, NDP Opposition Critic for Education said in a statement. “Jason Kenney is doing harm to students with complex needs, their families, and to tens of thousands of Alberta workers.” The NDP said this announcement comes just days after the UCP’s austerity budget would be cutting funds to post-secondary schools and municipalities in the province, resulting in thousands of layoffs: “Instead of standing by these hardworking Albertans, as he has asked private employers to do, Jason Kenney is pushing thousands of people onto a massively overwhelmed federal program.” They will also lose their benefits and salaries if they are laid off.
