Getting rid of the tailings, a mix of sand, salt, clay, and residual
bitumen and solvents, would allow the industry and the province to clear
a multi-billion-dollar liability. The new rules, under development by
the two governments and industry, would “authorize discharges of treated
effluent,” the Globe states, “even though the sector’s biggest

Highway 35 has been closed south of the town, and Alberta Emergency Alert has cautioned that parts of the town could lose power. Residents have been told to be prepared to leave in case the situation worsens.

Kenney has also promised to fund lawsuits against offending environmentalists and to call a public inquiry into the role of money from U.S. foundations.
“Stay tuned,” Energy Minister Sonya Savage said Tuesday. “We’ll have something to talk about next week.”
