Containment efforts will delay, not prevent, COVID-19 outbreak in Canada, Hajdu warns | CBC News

The new cabinet committee tasked with overseeing Canada’s response to COVID-19 will co-ordinate efforts to limit the health and economic effects of the virus.

The committee, chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland, will complement the work done by the Incident Response Group, meeting regularly to co-ordinate and prepare for a response to the health and economic impacts of the virus.

Other ministers on the eight-member committee include Health Minister Patty Hajdu, Public Safety Minister Bill Blair and Finance Minister Bill Morneau.

Chrystia Freeland’s committee include Bill Blair Bill Morneau. She’s a capable woman – don’t understand her having to work with a handicap.

Trudeau Calls for Consultation on Climate Targets – The Energy Mix

“Business and environmental groups
alike have taken issue with the slow pace the Prime Minister has set for
overhauling his government’s climate change plans, but Mr. Trudeau’s
speech did not indicate a desire to move any faster,” the Globe says.
“During last year’s campaign, the Liberals acknowledged they didn’t have
the full plan for reaching net-zero emissions by 2050, saying they
first needed to win the election. More than four months after their
re-election, they are just starting to decide on the consultation
framework that will lead to an updated climate plan.”

More recently, Environment Minister
Jonathan Wilkinson “acknowledged the mounting pressure on his government
to provide more information on climate policy so businesses can
adequately plan. But he said the consultations for the new climate plan
will only start by the summer and likely continue into next year.”

Groups linked to oil companies funded Facebook ads denouncing the rail blockades | CBC News

Oil and gas companies, and groups linked to them, have been spending big on Facebook ads that denounce the First Nations-led protests that have targetted rail transport in Canada in the past month.

These groups, some of which position themselves as grassroots movements, have spent an estimated $110,000 since the start of the year on Facebook advertising — either to promote the Coastal GasLink natural gas pipeline at the heart of the protests or to oppose the rail blockades as illegal. A CBC News analysis found these ads were shown to Facebook users about 20 million times.

CBC News looked at hundreds of Facebook ads since the start of the year that focus on the protests and rail blockades, which were launched by Wet’suwet’en activists and their supporters opposed to construction of the pipeline.

OPINION | Opinion | Why it’s time to end corporate welfare for Canada’s fossil fuel industry | CBC News

Given our renewed national interest in pipelines and oil sands mines, consider some strange bedfellows: economists who agree with environmentalists that subsidizing the fossil fuel industry is a bad idea.

Eliminating fossil fuel subsidies would obviously help Canada achieve its emissions-reduction targets. What’s less obvious is how these subsidies undermine our economy, add to the tax burden, and hinder innovation.

In Canada, consistent subsidy has failed to either provide stability or kick-start major innovation when it comes to fossil fuels.

Alberta’s anti-protestor bill suppresses democracy and violates treaties, say critics | Ricochet

Indigenous sovereignty and title underlie the recent surge in blockades and protests. In the landmark 1997 Delgamuukw v. British Columbia decision, the Supreme Court of Canada affirmed the existing right of the Wet’suwet’en Nation to the “exclusive use and occupation” of their traditional lands, a right the hereditary chiefs are demanding be upheld through the removal of the RCMP and Coastal GasLink from their territories.

“You see these levels of civil disobedience because that’s a necessary way for them to advocate for their rights and themselves as well,” Mihkwâw says, adding that communities often fail to find justice through the Canadian legal system.

“The side of the law has never been on the side of Indigenous people,” he says, and throughout Canadian history are examples of profoundly unjust but legal measures such as the Indian Act and the residential school program.
