Alberta Aims for ‘Balance’ in Climate Change Curriculum – The Energy Mix

Alberta Education Minister Adriana LaGrange is weighing in with a new
definition of “balance” in climate change education for K-12 students,
after getting wind that students are acquiring the “extremist view” that
we’re running out of time to get the climate crisis under control.

LaGrange “is endorsing a panel report that recommends school children
learn all views about climate change along with the value of the
province’s oil and gas sector,” The Canadian Press states.

Alberta’s post-secondary funding problem is staring them right in the face – Macleans.ca

The thousands of students who attend Alberta’s post-secondary institutions every year are used to their work being graded. But now, thanks to a new policy announced by the provincial government, the people running those universities and colleges will be getting their own report cards.

Beginning this year, up to 15 per cent of their operational funding will be tied to metrics like enrolment, graduation rates and the median incomes of their program’s graduates. That will reach 40 per cent of total funding by 2022—in addition to cuts in last year’s budget that reduced funding for operating expenses by five per cent. According to Demetrios Nicolaides, the Minister of Advanced Education, “this new model is designed to help our students succeed.”

How Ontario’s Teachers’ Strikes Could End — But Won’t Anytime Soon

Ontario’s teachers, all of whom are currently engaged in either rotating strikes or work-to-rule campaigns, are enjoying unusually strong public support,
said Johanna Weststar, an associate professor at London, Ont.’s Western
University who studies industrial relations and labour issues.

“I think teachers can very easily
start feeling embattled in these disputes,” she told HuffPost Canada.
“And in the past there wasn’t always support for teachers.”

There’s No Way Teachers Will Get Raises Above 1%, Doug Ford Says

Deputy ministers got a pay bump of 14% in October…

TORONTO — There is no way Ontario’s teachers will get salary raises higher than one per cent a year, Premier Doug Ford said Thursday.

“We either stay stagnant and roll over like the previous Liberal government did, give the unions whatever they want, or we can be responsible and respect the taxpayers’ money,” Ford told reporters outside his office at Queen’s Park.

Ontario’s Progressive Conservatives passed a law in November that caps salary raises for all public sector workers at one per cent. All four of the province’s major teachers’ unions are challenging the bill in court.

Secret Document Exposes Doug Ford’s Plan To Replace Human Teachers With Cheap Computers

Documents obtained by the Toronto Star show Doug Ford’s government is planning successive cuts to Ontario school boards into 2023.

Notably, the documents show Ford’s government wants to replace human
teachers with computers, suggesting Ontario will be “progressively
increasing” e-learning enrolment targets for “cost saving and revenue
generation.”

The document also outlines one idea to let teenagers obtain high school diplomas “entirely online” by 2024.

Is this a bad idea?
