Chevron is installing solar panels — to produce oil more cheaply | Renewables | JWN Energy

Since April, solar panels have been powering oil pumps at Chevron’s Lost Hills 7,981 barrel-a-day oil field, according to the company. The 29-megawatt site, owned and operated by San Jose-based SunPower Corp., is designed to provide the field with 80 per cent of its electricity, equal to taking more than 4,000 cars off the road. In exchange, Chevron will earn so-called low-carbon fuel standard credits worth about $4 million a year at current prices.

“Electricity is one of Lost Hills field’s largest operating expenses, so having solar will be an important factor to help keep those costs down and maintain the planned oil field life,” Veronica Flores-Paniagua, a Chevron spokeswoman, said in an email.

Canada, U.S. Pursue ‘Joint Interest’ in Getting Pipelines Built – The Energy Mix

“The Canadian federal government is advocating for the construction of the Keystone XL pipeline to continue,” Bloomberg writes, citing the Globe. “It’s also pushing for movement on the Line 3 replacement pipeline project between the two countries, which is awaiting final approval for the construction to start on the U.S. side.”

But it may take more than a friendly chat between two cabinet ministers, one of whom may well be out of office in another 174 days, to deliver on that agenda. Brouillette’s boss, Donald Trump, has spent much of the last four years trying to get new fossil infrastructure built. That effort culminated three weeks ago with a whirlwind of court or business decisions against the Keystone XL, Dakota Access, and Atlantic Coast pipelines, prompting U.S. campaigners to declare “a turning point in their war against the Trump administration’s effort to cement a fossil-fueled future for the United States,” InsideClimate News wrote at the time.

Toronto-based Shift Action. “It’s completely offside with all of
Canada’s climate commitments. And it’s a red flag for Canadians to be
worried about their pension savings.”

The results are painful: G20 governments have already committed over USD $160 billion to fossil fuels – and only 20% of it has any green conditions attached.

Cenovus takes advantage of cheap credits to boost oil output | Oilsands & Heavy Oil | JWN Energy

I guess no one told Cenovus Energy that we were transitioning to a green new world after the pandemic. Of course, we won’t hold our breath waiting for that to happen.

Cenovus Energy Inc. is taking advantage of a plunge in the price for credits that allow the oilsands company to produce more than output limits imposed by Alberta.

For August, those credits are trading at about $1.25 a barrel, compared with $7 or more before the global pandemic, according to people familiar with the market who asked not to be named because the prices aren’t public.

With those cheap credits, the Calgary-based company has pushed output to more than 405,000 barrels a day, up from less than 344,000 in April. Output at the company’s Christina Lake reached a record.
