In the latest incident August 17, The Canadian Press reports,
an offshore oil rig spilled an estimated 2,200 litres of oil into the
ocean southeast of St. John’s during a power outage, according to rig
operator Hibernia Management and Development Company. It happened just
two days after the drilling platform reopened, after being shut down in
the wake of a 12,000-litre spill last month.

Andrews, N.B., have received funding to study how chemicals used in oil
spill cleanups affect marine species.
Lots of science has come out of oil spill cleanups in the Gulf of Mexico, research scientist Benjamin de Jourdan said, but there isn’t much research on how those techniques will work in cold water climates off Canadian coastlines.
“We know we have different species up here, different conditions, different petroleum products,” he said.
