Federal Judge: Pipelines Must Not Cross Streams Without Considering Endangered Species

The Keystone XL route begins in Hardisty, Alberta, and extends south to Steele City, Nebraska. The pipeline will pass through the provinces of Alberta and Saskatchewan and the states of Montana, South Dakota and Nebraska.

Montana U.S. District Judge Brian Morris affirmed that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers cannot use a blanket water-crossing permit to approve new oil and gas pipelines without considering their impacts on endangered species.

6 arrested at Wet’suwet’en anti-pipeline camp | CBC News

Six people were arrested at a camp on traditional Wet’suwet’en
territory as RCMP conducted a pre-dawn raid to enforce an injunction
order against those blocking construction of the Coastal GasLink
pipeline in northern B.C.

According to supporters of the
blockade, more than a dozen RCMP officers moved past the police
checkpoint on Morice Forest Service Road early Thursday morning.

“It’s a whole damn army up there,” said Wet’suwet’en hereditary Chief Woos, who also goes by the name Frank Alec.

“They’ve got guns on, they’ve got tactical gear on. They look like they’re ready for war.”

Federal court dismisses Indigenous challenge of Trans Mountain pipeline expansion

OTTAWA — The Federal Court of Appeal says the government’s decision to approve the Trans Mountain pipeline expansion a second time is reasonable and will stand.

In a unanimous, 3-0 decision today, the court dismissed four challenges to that approval launched last summer by First Nations in British Columbia.

The government intends to finish the expansion and then sell both the existing pipeline and the expansion back to the private sector.

Jason Kenney’s Other Pipeline War Is with Michigan | The Tyee

Some wonder why Kenney, who has claimed Alberta is bullied by foreign-backed environmental advocates, has no problem intervening in the decision-making of a jurisdiction beyond Canada’s borders.

“The premier ought to take care of things that are directly impacting the citizens of Canada and let the people of Michigan take care of things that directly impact the citizens of Michigan,” said David Holtz, a spokesperson for the environmental group Oil & Water Don’t Mix, based in northern Michigan’s Traverse City.

Last June, Kenney notified his 173,000 Facebook followers that Michigan’s leaders are trying to decommission Enbridge’s Line 5, a nearly 70-year-old pipeline traversing the state. Line 5 serves as a shortcut for moving Alberta crude oil to refineries in Sarnia, Ontario, accounting for about 70 per cent of the oil it carries.
