Three in five Canadians support construction of new pipelines: Nanos survey

TORONTO –
Days after shovels hit the ground in Alberta on the Trans Mountain
pipeline expansion, a new survey suggests the majority of Canadians
support the construction of new pipelines.

The survey, commissioned by CTV News and conducted by Nanos Research, polled 1,010 Canadians and found that 42 per cent supported new pipelines while another 23 per cent somewhat supported them.

Just under a third, or 30 per cent, oppose or somewhat oppose pipeline
construction. Four per cent of respondents said they were unsure.

Alberta Fossils Aim to Push More Oil Through the Same Pipes – The Energy Mix

This week, Bloomberg reports that companies like Cenovus Energy, Gibson Energy, Imperial Oil, and MEG Energy “are looking to remove condensate and other light oils from the oilsands bitumen they produce, so they can get more of it onto rail cars,” adding that “doing so would dramatically reduce the cost of shipping crude by rail to the U.S. Gulf Coast, which otherwise can cost twice as much as shipping by pipeline.”

‘Keystone was a turning point’: U.S. environmentalists claim credit for slowing down oilsands expansion | CBC News

It was the fall of
2008, and a group of environmental activists spent part of a conference
there brainstorming tactics for slowing down the growth of the oilsands
— and they identified pipelines as the most vulnerable target.

One
in particular fit the bill: Keystone XL — a 1,897-kilometre pipeline to
be built by TC Energy that would carry up to 830,000 barrels of crude
oil per day from Hardisty, Alta., to Nebraska, where it would link up
with the company’s existing pipeline network.

Their
fateful decision at that meeting to throw money and organizational
effort into attacking the proposed pipeline opened a difficult new
chapter for the oilpatch.

Now, those activists are claiming victory.

Government plans to help First Nations, Métis groups get capital for resource projects | CBC News

First Nations and Métis groups could soon have access to $1 billion in loans and loan guarantees over four years to start their own large and medium-sized resource projects.

At a news conference Tuesday at the Canadian Energy Museum near Devon, Kenney called the initiative a “game-changer” and a “paradigm shift” that could help get a pipeline built to the West Coast.

“We’re not going to get a pipeline built unless there is First Nations support and involvement,” Kenney said. “And this helps to facilitate that.”

Varcoe: Court challenge brings new threat to pipeline and Alberta’s plans to balance budget

“It’s over and over and over again,” Savage told reporters.

“This is part of the game plan of some of these activist organizations, is you litigate over and over and over again until project proponents give up.”

To be clear, Wednesday’s Federal Court of Appeal decision on the Trans Mountain pipeline expansion did not derail the long-awaited project, which recently moved to restart construction.

But the ruling did give permission for six of 12 legal challenges to be heard against the federal government’s re-approval in June of the project.
