Federal court dismisses Indigenous challenge of Trans Mountain pipeline expansion

OTTAWA — The Federal Court of Appeal says the government’s decision to approve the Trans Mountain pipeline expansion a second time is reasonable and will stand.

In a unanimous, 3-0 decision today, the court dismissed four challenges to that approval launched last summer by First Nations in British Columbia.

The government intends to finish the expansion and then sell both the existing pipeline and the expansion back to the private sector.

Enbridge’s Line 3 pipeline clears hurdle as Minnesota regulators approve environmental review | CBC News

Commissioner Matt Schuerger disagreed with the majority, saying the updated review “doesn’t adequately represent the consequences of a spill,” the Star Tribune reported.

Enbridge said in a filing ahead of Friday’s hearing that the record continues to show the project is needed.

Jason Kenney’s Other Pipeline War Is with Michigan | The Tyee

Some wonder why Kenney, who has claimed Alberta is bullied by foreign-backed environmental advocates, has no problem intervening in the decision-making of a jurisdiction beyond Canada’s borders.

“The premier ought to take care of things that are directly impacting the citizens of Canada and let the people of Michigan take care of things that directly impact the citizens of Michigan,” said David Holtz, a spokesperson for the environmental group Oil & Water Don’t Mix, based in northern Michigan’s Traverse City.

Last June, Kenney notified his 173,000 Facebook followers that Michigan’s leaders are trying to decommission Enbridge’s Line 5, a nearly 70-year-old pipeline traversing the state. Line 5 serves as a shortcut for moving Alberta crude oil to refineries in Sarnia, Ontario, accounting for about 70 per cent of the oil it carries.

Why Is It Always Someone Else’s Fault?

Mr Kenney has painted himself into a corner. He’s convinced Albertans
that our economy will be driven by nothing but energy for a long time
to come and that energy investment is driven by government policy and
not global markets. Therefore, when his energy-centric government
policies fail to produce the desired result because multi-national
players would rather invest elsewhere, Kenney needs someone (other than
himself) to blame for Alberta’s faltering economy.

Trot out Trudeau (again).

Global oversupply sets up LNG for a year of record low prices

Coastal Gaslink and the Kitimat LNG Facility are ramping up and expect to have thousands of workers on site by the end of this year.

SINGAPORE (Bloomberg) – Liquefied natural gas prices are poised to test record lows this year thanks to an onslaught of new supply and warmer winter temperatures curbing consumption.

The startup of new export projects from Australia to the U.S. has flooded the market, while brimming stockpiles in Europe and an expected slowdown in Chinese demand have dumped cold water on consumption prospects. LNG for spot delivery to North Asia is on track to hit an all-time low this summer, while gas prices in Europe and the U.S. are trading at the weakest seasonal levels since 1999.
