In the seven years that Blais was in charge he didn’t do anything to
address racism within the HRP force in a substantive way. Despite plenty
of evidence to the contrary he continued to den= that the problem even
exists.
Racism pervades the department, and I am not talking about bad apples
(although they are part of the problem). I am talking about the
systemic variety.
Let me give you an example.

group’s largest chapter is in Alberta. Across the board, the Threepers
have a hyper focus on Islam—in one instance a former leader of the group
staked out a Calgary mosque—and their beliefs are rife with paranoia,
conspiracy theories, and far-right news and rhetoric. While members of
the group take offence at being called racist or far-right they don’t
attempt to hide their extremely negative sentiments regarding Islam or
their belief that violence, one day, may be necessary to protect
themselves and their loved ones.

The Conservative movement in Canada (and around the world) has been pandering to far right and populist movements for a period of time, but this has accelerated in the last few years, emboldened by the election of Donald Trump, the ‘success’ of the Brexit referendum, and a resurgent Russia that is seeking to sow discord in formerly stable liberal democracies.
In Canada, the activity really started to ramp up with the advent of Rebel Media, and in the period of the CPC’s last term and lead up to the 2015 election campaign. During this time, we saw the CPC under then Immigration Minister Jason Kenney impose a niqab ban (2011) and calls for a barbaric cultural practices hotline.
