Fifteen workers at the restaurant are represented by the Workers United Canada Council, and were seeking a 30-cent per hour increase in the most recent round of collective bargaining. The franchise owner, JP Shearer, offered 20 cents, which would bring the wage to $11.95/hr.
These same RCMP commanders told officers to arrest even the
grandparents and children and argued that snipers use lethal force.
There was an idea to have social services present to apprehend the
children.
While this information is shocking, it is hardly surprising. Violence
and incarceration of Indigenous land and water protectors in defense of
corporate interest is the de facto response to land defenders asserting
indigenous sovereignty.

“You cannot discriminate people on the basis of their religion,” he said. “If you have accepted refugees, you cannot just say Muslims are not welcome, but everybody else can come.”
Desiree McIvor and her partner were out shopping on Monday afternoon and stopped at the Michaels store on Regent Avenue West.
“We
weren’t even in the door for about five seconds and this lady
approached us and I thought it was going to be the usual ‘Hey, do you
need any help or assistance?’” said McIvor, a member of Sagkeeng First
Nation.
“She said, ‘Well, you’re not welcome here and you guys have to leave.’”
“I was in complete shock, I couldn’t believe what she said.”

“I honestly couldn’t believe it at first,” says Upshaw. “I just stood
there for a second. I went home and went to bed and tried to let it go,
but I couldn’t.”
On Halloween, Upshaw made a post on Facebook about the figures. He
says that as soon as he made the post, white people in the community
began attacking him. Upshaw says he is disappointed by the response, and
that he made the post to try to draw attention to the issue and to
express the discomfort members of the Black community feel in the hopes
that the figures would be addressed.
