Toronto keeps flooding when it rains hard. Here’s why
Weather happens day by day, climate
changes over time. Phillips won’t declare the Aug. 7 rains a direct
result of climate change but does say the surprise rain storm had
“elements of it.” Speed and humidity are two. Another factor is the
warmth created by urban heat: the cars, buildings and asphalt.

“As we warm up … the wildness,
wackiness of the weather is going to get even more so. These heavy doses
of rain that Toronto has had in the last decade, well, that will seem
average compared to what we potentially would see in the next 20 years,”
Phillips said.
